Luitze has extensive experience in hydrodynamic and morphodynamic studies. Over the past years, he has been involved in the development, calibration, and validation of numerical models for studies in coastal areas and estuaries across the world. Throughout his career, he has contributed to numerous port and coastal development projects, assessing the effects of engineering interventions on currents, waves, salinity and salt intrusion, density-driven flows, and morphological processes, including sedimentation and erosion.
As both a specialist and team leader of the numerical modelling team within the Rivers, Coasts and Seas department at ARCADIS, Luitze gained extensive expertise in assessing the impacts of interventions in coastal systems. Building on this experience, he now provides strategic advice on coastal engineering projects in his role as Coastal Projects Advisor. More recently, he has developed significant experience in managing multidisciplinary projects that integrate a wide range of water-related disciplines.
Director of Marine Acoustics
Joost works at WaterProof as Director of Marine Acoustics. He has more than ten years of experience in marine research. Since joining WaterProof in 2018, he has specialised in the effects of underwater sound on marine mammals, working on acoustic projects around the world for a wide range of clients. He now leads WaterProof’s marine acoustics team, guiding a group of specialists in underwater sound and marine mammal monitoring, modelling, research and impact assessment.
Joost leads several large research projects on the impact of offshore wind development on cetacean populations in the North Sea. This work helps build the scientific evidence needed to make sure the energy transition is possible without undue harm to the North Sea ecology.
He leads and carries out Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) contributions on anthropogenic sound, including sound from foundation installation (pile driving), vessels, underwater explosions such as UXO clearance, and seismic surveys.
Joost also advises on underwater sound and marine mammal impact for offshore wind projects, working with contractors and with the Dutch government. In this role he connects scientific research, regulation and day-to-day offshore operations, translating complex acoustic findings into clear, workable advice for developers and policymakers.
Throughout his career, Joost has published his research findings in several scientific publications.
Managing Director
Marieke Snoek is the Managing Director and co-owner of WaterProof.
Her connection to WaterProof is both personal and professional. Her brother, Roelant, founded WaterProof together with Luitze Perk in 2015. Through his energy, curiosity, and entrepreneurial spirit, he built WaterProof into a specialised consultancy for the marine sector, with a strong focus on underwater noise and its impact on marine life. His drive to push boundaries and develop new knowledge continues to inspire the organisation.
When Roelant was diagnosed with a terminal illness, he asked Marieke to continue building WaterProof together with Luitze. She accepted without hesitation.
Marieke’s background is in entrepreneurship. As Managing Director of Cycloon (2012–2024), a social and sustainable postal and bicycle courier company, she led the organisation through a period of growth from 40 to more than 1,200 employees across 40 locations. During those years, she discovered the importance of giving people the space to develop their talents, building a strong organisational culture, and bringing people together around a shared ambition. She believes that everyone has unique talents and that good leadership begins with creating opportunities for people to realise their full potential.
She brings this experience to her role as Managing Director of WaterProof, where she focuses on strengthening the organisation and creating the conditions for the company’s specialists to apply their expertise to its fullest potential for clients. Together, they continue to build on the foundation laid by Roelant and Luitze: driven by curiosity, independence, innovation, and a constant awareness of the impact of their work on the world around them.
